ALPs Meeting Notes for 11-15-11

I.                   Welcome: Meeting called to order – Stacey Johnson

III.             Treasury Report by Paul
a.       $1610.92 total; petty cash: $329.00

IV.             Everyone introduced themselves; Elizabeth – a new member and certified as Global Messenger last month; Amber Gilbert is returning back to ALP’s; Leann attended “Tip a Fireman” at Cheddars and raised $3,000; Paul & Amber attended Joe’s Crab Shack last Friday for Torch Run in Lewisville & Mesquite; Andrea Emery is no longer an ALP as she is moving to Iowa due to her dad’s new job

V.                Service Hours Update – Cyndi reminded all ALPs to turn in service hours (attached the hours info and spreadsheet to track your hours)

VI.             Committee reports:
a.       Paul – debriefed last SMT meeting where his niece’s school wants to do a challenge day, discussed competitions including bowling, figure skating, and upcoming (now completed) Fall Games (he lead the athlete oath)
b.      Ryan – also debriefed SMT meeting including discussions about Aquatics, Softball/Bocce, SMT Christmas party, and continuing discussions about basketball and the need for a venue/location
c.       Denise – had Families and Outreach set up at bowling competition and it went extremely well – Martha, Bertha, and Stacey and Leanne attended as well; Denise stated that Families is all about encouragement and improvement for the athletes and families.

VII.          Jim – gave report on bowling.  Volunteered and helped with various aspects of bowling, particularly with scoring and opening ceremonies (where he announced the teams); it was a wonderful time and it went extremely well. All coaches and athletes were impressed with how smooth it was.  Everyone is looking forward to it next year; 600+ volunteers and 2,500+ athletes over a 10 day competition.

VIII.       Polar Plunge – Cyndi would like ALP’s to attend the polar plunge; 3 to 4 athletes at registration, 2 to 3 athletes walking around talking about SOTX, plunging will start at 10:00 AM.  If athletes would like to plunge with Cyndi, it is $50.00.  All money goes towards SOTX. 

IX.             Cyndi forgot survey results L, but is still waiting on a few of them from some members – Ryan Falcon, Jim Myers and Myles Barmon

X.                Holiday party will be at Paul Holland’s House on December 4th.  We will be donating food, etc to SPCA, so please bring food/toy that you think your pet would like to have to donate to SPCA.

XI.             Other announcements:
a.       Next meeting is Tuesday, January 17th at Region 10 at 7pm; Area Conference will happen before at 5:30pm
b.      Volleyball Competition is this Saturday, November 19th at SMU Dedman Center and McCullogh Intermediate School (Highland Park ISD)
c.       Basketball Coaches Training is Saturday, December 3rd from 9 AM – 3 PM at McCullogh Intermediate School;
d.      Cyndi would like ALP’s members to become coaches; she also clarified a few regarding certification of becoming a coach: if athlete is a head coach, he/she cannot participate in that particular competition; however, if the athlete is an assistant coach, he/she may compete in the competition; example: Blaine is head coach for golf, so he cannot compete in golf competition; decides he wants to be an assistant coach and he is then able to compete in competitions (attached is the coaching reminders for everyone)

STATE Male Athlete of the Year (22 and older): Paul Holland

Paul Holland is a bowling, athletics and bocce athlete from the Greater Dallas area. Holland joined Special Olympics Texas in 1990 and serves the organization in several ways. He is a Global Messenger and member of the Athlete Leadership Program, as well as a certified athlete bowling coach.

MEETING NOTES FOR 9/13/2011

Hello ALP's,
Last night was a great meeting and I really enjoyed it very much :) Attached you will find the notes from the meeting last night for those they could not make it or for those that could to write fast enough. I have also attached the updated ALP's roster and Global Messenger List with Patrick's correct info. You will also find the ALP's survey which I still need a copy from: Myles, Jim, Ryan, Michael, Jeffrey, Elizabeth, Herbert & Schelly. Lastly, attached is the info on how to get started on becoming a coach (the paperwork aspect that can be completed online). Below is a few reminders for the upcoming events that we have coming up that I need ALP's for:

Dunham & Miller Golf Tourney next Tuesday, September 20th from 10:30-3:30pm at Tour 18 (8718 Amen Corner Flower Mound, Texas 75022); Athletes will speak to players at the designated holes/tees to greet players and tell them about Special Olympics. We will also have a few athletes at a designated green to putt and collect money. Food will be provided for the athletes and all athletes should wear ALP's polo, khaki shorts and name tags. So far I have Stacey, Jonathan, Paul, Denise, Patrick, John & Jacob for this event

Event for Employees of St. Jude Medical on Friday, October 7th from 10:30-3pm at St. Jude Medical (6901 Preston Road Plano Texas 75024-located behind 6500 Pinecrest in the corporate office complex); Athletes will mingle, have fun, shoot hoops and have food; this is a fundraising drive; all athletes will need to wear their ALP's shirts and comfortable pants and shoes.
